On the 23rd of August 2009, in the stadium where our lessons were taking place, a rally was held in opposition to a new law that had recently been adopted by the National Assembly. The law granted a number of new rights to women in marriage, including equal status; however, a great number of the people in attendance were nevertheless married women. As tempting as it might be to jump in in support of such a proposal, the nuances of the controversy are great. Could an increase in rights lead to a decrease in protections? Can you change a worldview by changing a law?
