By kind permission of the National Portrait Gallery. This is a tour of the exhibition during the Press View on 23rd June 2010. The Exhibition opens 24th June and can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery until 19th September 2010.
The BP Portrait Award attracts submissions from all over the world - but not all can get to see it. Hopefully this video will go some way to showing artists what the competition looks like!

  • I've also just checked out that bit of the video @ 3.50 - and the problem I had in that bit of the gallery was that a camera crew were all set up in that corner - and had been for some time - and I literally had to squeeze past them to get the shots I did! I had no way of being able to shoot some of the portraits properly.

  • Andres - I'm not sure how much you are aware of constraints on uploading videos to YouTube. I was very conscious that I needed to get the video under 10 minutes in order to be able to upload it consequently some paintings get less attention than others. I've lingered longer on the winners and those I liked. It's a personal thing - but it's also dictated by logistics.

  • Well I only bought my camcorder after the exhibition last year!

However I've got permission to video the Threadneedle Prize!

  • Thanks Robyn and Felicity - it was people like you, who aren't going to get to see the exhibition, that I was thinking of when I made the video!

  • Bellissima mostra-sarebbe stato bello poterla vedere!!Grazie per il video! Thanks!!!

  • @SoflesViolence

You're maybe not aware that the prize had already been awarded before the painting got any publicity. The selection and choice of prizewinner is done at the same time. However it's customary to keep the announcement as to who's won until after the exhibition has been hung and it's made at the awards ceremony the evening before the exhibition opens (or sometimes soon after it opens)

Publicity has no influence whatsoever on the choice of prizewinner

  • thanks for the video, i just really wish you hadnt swiped the 12 pieces at about 3:50, they looked very interesting and worthwhile.

  • I wish you had done this for every year.

    Thank you

  • Thanks for this Katherine, it's great to see these portraits as they are actually hung together. I have no excuses for not going to see it for real! Your zooming in on key pieces was most useful too :)
