The primary contribution of this effort is the development of an automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) network test-bed for research of new software processes to improve the warranty and recall management.
The automotive test-bed is composed of multiple ECUs, a Wii-Remote, a model car, a driving simulator and a real-time vehicle monitor. Each microcontroller-based ECU executes control algorithms - anti-lock braking system, cruise control, traction control, stability control, automatic-gear transmission. All ECUs run the nano-RK real-time operating system and communicate via Controller Area Network (CAN). They read the driver inputs from the Wii-Remote and vehicle performance parameters from the simulator, then accordingly drive the simulated car on the simulator. The simulator provides real-time physics-based driving simulation, returning parameters such as wheel speeds, RPM, brake pressure, car speed, yaw rate. The vehicle monitor displays real-time data in form of scopes. The data that can be monitored are brake pressure and wheel slip for each wheel, yaw rate, throttle, gear, RPM and car speed. The monitor makes it easy to verify if the different control algorithms are functioning correctly or not.
