New Years is a time of tradition. In New York City they drop the ball and party in Times Square. In Atlanta, Ga. they drop the Peach and party at Underground. And in other communities throughout the world people party, shoot-off fireworks and participate in other traditional New Year Eve events. But down south, out in west Georgia, in the the town of Tallapoosa, they drop a Possum at midnight. This year I was invited to attend this gala event. Around five-hundred people came to dance, party and witness 2011 arrive with the possum. Here is one of my clips from the News Year Eve Possum drop in Tallapoosa, Georgia. Enjoy!

  • @rawl6300 How is it sick and cruel? the possum was flattened by a car, the animal's fur was salvaged and stuffed by a taxidermist, they didn't do that to a live possum...who would even try?

  • @TheJulesandCloShow not quite as horrible as your spelling of the word "horrible" though. jussayin.

  • @12ealDeal the possum was real at one time, it was previously roadkill and a taxidermist took the fur and stuffed it for this occasion...

  • disgusting

  • i think its hilarious and awesome. Its not like its alive. The town (Tallapoosa,Ga) used to be called "Possum Snout" so I guess their annual "Possum Drop" to ring in the new year is an ode to that history.

  • you people are sick that is horibal

  • @rawl6300 As someone who is often polarized by Southern customs and traditions, I thought the Opossum drop was absolutely crazy. Then I learned that the Opossum wasn't real, and it's really just the same premise as the Peach drop. Of course, the idea of an 'Opossum Drop' was ingloriously Southern, and it really personifies the mentality of this community.
