From every standpoint, intonation, sound quality, especially as breaking chords and crossing strings, from the standpoint of phrasing, bow articulation, insight into this type of music, and finally, regarding the ability of a musician to actually raise the listener's level of awareness,,,,,,,from EVERY standpoint,,,I always believed Grumiaux's solo Bach,,,,and everything else he played for that matter,,,,was absolutely the best. Sad he is so overshadowed by so many cheap fiddlers.

This is the first time that I have heard the historically correct tempo for this [Tempo] Siciliano approximated in a commercial recording. All other recordings that I know of take it too slowly. While for the most part violinists lost the Sicilliano/Siciliana tradition, vocalists have not--maybe because they have to breathe. There are a lot of Aria Siciliana movements in Bach's cantatas, always in 12/8. Listen to almost any recording and you will see what I mean.
