Steiner School is a portrait of the well known Holywood school in N.Ireland, based on the progressive ideas of Rudolf Steiner. The ethos aims to nurture the whole child, both academically and spiritually and to develop the individual talents, which every child possesses.

In the words of one teacher at the school, "we will develop their abilities so that when they become young adults, they can go out and create society as they want to create it, not as we want them to be".

At a time of national debate around the pressures on 'childhood' and at a point when school and university systems are increasingly 'industry-focused', this interesting film offers a child-centred view of education, which seems as radical now as it did in the 1920s.

  • My kids went to that school.I had to take them out after a year. It was totally weird and full of woolly thinkers. Oh yes,and if your face doesn't fit you get the cold shoulder. Many of the older children are from middle class families whose children have failed the state selection test and are faced with going to a state comprehensive, they can afford the fees(or donations) see.

  • I'm sorry your experience wasn't great and I can't tell you about the school your kids went to, but this one is welcoming to everyone and is certainly not just for middle class families, you only pay what you can afford here, which in my case wasn't much.

  • I would strongly suspect that pupils that this school produces, will leave it with a naivety of the world around them. The principle of the school is a nice idea but in the cold hard light of day, trying to fit into society with different ideologies will be a daunting and challenging task for them to face. Good luck to them.

  • Now he is so bright and intelligent and speaks his mind about a lot of things with deep thought on a lot of questionable topics. No he cannot read or write but we have to allow children to have time to develop emotionally so that they can go into hard learning with an open mind. Im not crazy I didnt go to this school but I wish I did. If everyone went, we would have a much better society. p.s. We dont believe in the christianity and deep spiritual bit.

  • My seven year old brother now goes to a lovely steiner school in Edinburgh after leaving a horrid state school that really damaged him. He was put under a lot of pressure to learn how to write a letter. He got shouted at very often for not being up to date with his work. He was only 5. But then my mother and father took him out and put him in Steiner.

  • @mummyfunk agree with colours and following teacher happened quite alot at my steiner school but i questioned the teacher alot and it was fine... and i was there for 7 years and only 1 person ever got expelled

  • @angel54020 i am 14 2 and went a a steiner school for 7 years and loved it but if you were to join you would probibly be quite abit ahead of the class you join as steiner hold back english but tbh i think this video misrepresents steiner school mine was really different and yeah it is expensive but it is a one of a kind school if you ever get to join one make sure it has lots of out door area i.e. Moray steiner has 8 acres of land and it wouldnt be the same without that

  • i'm a 14 year old girl and I would really like to move to a steiner school is it too late in my education to start now? and also why is is so expensive? in my opinion it should be free.

  • Mummy says im special...... NEEDS

  • I went to a state school, and I think I turned out OK... BUT a lot has changed since then. My teachers didn't have the constant pressure of SATs and the national curriculum, so we had time to explore topics more deeply. We had time to be curious. Clearly Waldorf isn't for everyone, and some schools seem more full on than others, but that doesn't mean it's all bad. I wish the state system could take a few leaves out of their book.
