@ffjsb Good point, thanks for explaining and it makes perfect sense

@gsarjos No it wouldn't be the case, providing a tower or ladder pipe was actually hitting the burning structure or contents. The water from that deck gun is still traveling upwards when it reaches the hot burning gases so it will vaporize and be carried upwards as steam, never hitting whats burning. That's why you always aim a fire stream at the BASE of the flames, or directly onto a burning surface to cool it. Remember it's not actually the item that produces the flame, it's the hot gases.

@ffjsb well wouldn't that be the case for the tower as well? and the other sources being poured in from the roof?
-
The deck gun on the engine is doing absolutely nothing, all the water is being vaporized and carried upwards by the heat and smoke. They should have repositioned it to that open doorway.

what was in that store

An old Nikon? Wow. The picture is really good.
The firehose comment makes sense.
Thanks!
Sorry, I don't use this email much anymore. If you're talking about what actually burned down, it was a bowling alley that held leagues for local schools. If you mean where the people are running from, that's an Italian pastry shop, a good one, that's still in business and doing fine.

The video is really sharp and clean. At least to me. What kind of camera did you use? Oh, and what does shooting a stream of water high out over the fire accomplish? It seems like the water would just evaporate before it got to the fire.

It was an old Nikon Coolpix 5000. An unbelievable camera for it's size. And the water was streaming down the side of the building where the local car dealer had Volvo's parked.
