i know kiribati is a form of 'gilberts' island... but doesn't look like it should be -kee-ree-bah-tee ... rather than kee-ree-bahs ? What was the original name of this place ? (pre-contact)

Kiribati (pronounced /ˈkɪrɨbæs/ ( listen) KIRR-i-bas;[3] Gilbertese: [ˈkiɾibas]),

Apparently even though it is spelled as "Kiribati", the pronounciation goes "Keereebahs".

@socalshakas The original name for the Gilbert Islands (which make up only part of present-day Kiribati) was Tungaru.

And don't worry about the spelling, it doesn't have to make sense.

I've always wanted to visit Kiribati. Sadly it's to difficult to get there and besides it's to expensive :(. Hope i can travel there some day.
