The Grand Canal is the main road in old Venice. There are no cars in the historic city centre (Centro Storico) and people commute on foot and in boats, which are also used to deliver goods. The sides of this magnificent canal - for it has no shores - are lined with stunning buildings: palaces and residences, which are now in better condition than they have been for many years. Andrew and I walked a good distance along the Grand Canal on our first day in Venice.
