We had to create our own heads in ZBrush and make it look like we were much older for a class project.

I'm having some stretching issues with the UVW maps on the back of the head and neck, but otherwise it is turning out ok for my first head model and second ZBrush model.

I created the UVW maps by photographing my face from several angles and combining them together in Photoshop. Yes, I shaved my head bald to get it right.

  • how do you feel about this project after a couple years? A long time ago someone asked me to make them look older with stage makeup; like as old as his father... It didn't turn out so well. Now, after sculpting portraits for so long, I realized that it would have turned out better if I had a bunch of detailed photo references of his father while I was applying the make-up.

  • @salsa101 I think it turned out pretty well for a first model. I could have taken the detail to a significantly higher level. I did do a lot of research and photo reference, even shaved my head for texture mapping, but it is missing that fine level of extreme detail that you see in many ZBrush sculpts from other artists.

  • thats a very good model and the texture looks great. im having problems trying to smoothen out the poles of a sphere. the rest of the sphere will smoothen but the poles stay perfectly still. i dont know why this is happening. can anyone help?

  • Yes, the poles are probably triangles instead of quads. Triangle polygons don't smooth very well. Try cutting/deleting faces and edges to get all quads, or an even faster method is to just run a smooth on top of a cube that has no divisions. It will become a sphere and have all quads.

  • Your work is amazing. I am trying find a computer program where my son (17) can learn this art. Can you guide me? He is quite gifted and I am at a loss. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

  • Well that will depend on your budget and what he is interested in, to determine what software I would recommend. Does he want to do 2D computer art? 3D? Animation? Illustration? The program I used for this piece was mainly Zbrush, Photoshop and 3ds Max. All of which can be purchased at student prices since I assume your son is a student being 17 years old. I would also recommend getting a Wacom Tablet.
