http://www.ted.com Speaking at the first TED Conference in 1984, Nicholas Negroponte waxes prophetic on the converging fields of technology, entertainment and design. Years before anyone was using the word "convergence," Negroponte was thinking about TV screens as the "electronic books of the future" and computers as the future of education. In excerpts from his 2-hour talk (this was before TED's 18-minute time limit), he foreshadowed CD-ROMs, web interfaces, service kiosks, the touchscreen interface of the iPhone, and his own One Laptop per Child project. Oh, and there's also a fascinating project called Lip Service, which, well, let's just say it's still ahead of us ...

  • I was at the first TED and at the founders' request put together a last minute team to video the workshops (including this one). Remember, folks, one of the huge highlights of this TED Conference was the amazing, astounding 128 K Macintosh computer, complete with a mouse and MacPaint! The had about 15 or 20 of them set up. Like most everyone there, I rushed home and bought one....for about $3,500 (plus a $3000 printer!) As someone else posted here, Negroponte was waaaay ahead of the pack.

  • He's an iProphet

  • Oh, man. The guy is a GENIUS and PROPHET, talking in 1984 (25+ yrs ago) about things that are only recently coming to widespread use (not to mention all the things he has accomplished since)....and you are quibbling about his speaking style!? LOL

  • This guy is a poor speaker. I'm quite sure that it's not his profession, but if you're going to conduct public speaking you must make it less irratating. example, " I would like to explain this most interesting point, which is, um...okay....hmmmm. okay, before i tell you I will......(touching stuff). This is extremely important for you to know....okay...hmmmm...what a minute...let's try this again. The thing i want to tell you is, well, let's go back to this image. okay, well...first..."

  • I was born in 84, so: what the hell is Teletex? What is that big slide thing that looks like an LP?

I actually want to get rid of my mouse as as soon as it's cheaper to do so (who doesn't?)

  • I was gonna post a comment about an hour ago but I lost track of where my mouse was and thus couldn't scroll down :(

Just kidding, fascinating and prophetic talk. (And he is indeed right about having to wiggle the mouse in order to find the cursor...)

  • Why isn't he using MS Powerpoint? hehe

  • yes

  • Wow, I regularly use a data program on automotive repair and it's almost exactly the same as the program he showed, a bit more sophitcated but the basic idea is the same and of course we stuck with the mouse, hehe.
