'US desires Saleh regime to continue'

Interview with Richard Becker of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition from San Francisco

The US wants to embolden Yemeni President Saleh's regime to continue to serve capitalist interests even after the dictator steps down.

In an interview with Press TV, Richard Becker, of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, gives an account of the US government's interests in Yemen as President Saleh struggles to hold onto his regime amid massive civilian protests.

Press TV: President Saleh of Yemen has not given any particular solution to the situation in Yemen; it seems he is not in favor of any political breakthrough, either. What is your take?

Becker: I think it's clear that he's desperately trying to hold onto his office, offering deals and then renouncing deals, and playing a game back and forth hoping that not only his supporters within the country but, more importantly, the Saudi and US regimes will enable him to stay in place.

It's particularly important from the point of view of Washington that the Saleh regime be continued. The US view is that Saleh himself is expendable. Saleh doesn't look at it that way but the US is very determined that whether or not he remains in office the regime remains in power; a regime that will collaborate with the US and accept the role as being a client state and serve US interests in the Middle East region.

Press TV: The US seems to play a bystander role in Yemen. The news about the recent US drones strikes in that country refers to an active military role. What's your take on the latest US position in the Yemen revolution?

Becker: I think that they have made it clear for some time now that they have no such animosity or hostility toward the Saleh regime as they did towards the regimes in Syria and Libya. They've treated it very differently.

We can just remember back to the day before the UN bombing began. Two days after the UN Security Council resolution was passed calling for a no-fly zone and "protection of civilians", in between those two days -- the 17th of March was the resolution, the 19th of March the bombing began, and on the 18th of March there was a massacre in Sana'a where at least 52 people were killed, probably many, many more, hundreds were wounded by sniper fire and automatic weapons fire -- the United States attitude towards that was simply to say that we needed to find out whether or not the security forces had been involved in that massacre.

That incident alone, the contrast there, is very educational as to what the real role of the US is in regard to the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh.
