The American food system doesn't make it easy for small farmers to get their healthy food to your home, but meet two farmers who are trying: Ricky Horton and Sherilyn Shepard. They're siblings who grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables in southwestern Virginia. Their livelihood is filled with uncertainties ranging from unpredictable weather to changing immigration laws. Here's their story.

Great video. For marketing, small farmers might try advertise on internet such as craiglist, not sure they sell at farmers market. Quality and cost control is very important. If possible to cut cost, start making your own fertilizer, don't use chemical as it is bad and not helping with post control. My goal is to have a small sustainable organic farm(including chickens, fish) here in US or Thailand that feed my family, and sell excess to public.

Thank you for this video. As an organic grower I find the struggles represented in the video are so true. AND, agree that you work with land because you love it. Finding a healthy balance during the intensity of the season is something we wrestle with each year.

Our government and big food corporations (monsanto, cargill, etc.) are destroying our farmers. Buy from your local CSA and farmers markets and vote for small farms with your dollars. The government subsidies and FDA are certainly doing nothing for them.

I think these two could stand to pick a few vegetables and not talk about the local labor without including themselves.

I think the small farmer is very important for america. For one I think they should not have to pay taxes in order to help them survive.
