A decision by actor Mel Gibson to film a movie on Judah Maccabee has been harshly criticized by Jewish organizations around the world.
Abraham Foxman director of the Anti-Defamation League declared Judah Maccabee the hero of the Jewish people and a universal hero in the struggle for religious liberty deserve better.
Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles called Gibson's involvement an insult to Jews.
Gibson's company Icon Production is collaborating with Time Warner to develop the film and it is still unclear whether Gibson will play the lead role or direct the film.
Gibson's 2004 film, "The Passion of the Christ," was a blockbuster hit but proved wildly divisive, with Jewish audiences taking offense to the way Jews were portrayed.
In 2006, Gibson was recorded during an arrest as he drunkenly blamed the Jews for all the wars in the world.
In the second century BCE, Judah Maccabee led the Jewish revolt against the Greek Syrians and the success of the revolt is celebrated in the Hannukah festival.
