  • 'Poor Hildegard Behrens'?

    HARDLY.

Jessye Norman may have seemingly stolen the show in this particular section, yes, but Hildegard Behrens was also incredible in her own right.

  • Hildegard you made me cry in Elektra in 1995 with Rysanek. For always you will remain in my heart. Your nobility, the force of your voice, a total engagement. I kiss you in the sky.

  • Jessye Norman = POWERHOUSE!

  • I've heard this umpteen times but Jessye Norman still makes me cry.

  • Brava Jessye! That's how Wagner is done!

  • When Jessye takes that huge breath, you just KNOW something EPIC is going to happen.

  • @Greatfan One mustn't underestimate the difficulties of Sieglinde. For most of the evening the role is quite low, thickly orchestrated, heavy on the strings, which are dangerous for the female voice. The entrance of Siegmund & Sieglinde Act 2 (f. ex.)That's where you hear the quality of a Sieglinde (BTW here you couldn't always hear Norman in the house). Once the soprano gets to Act 3 she's home free. I've never heard a bad "O hehrstes Wunder."

  • I love Jessye Norman here, and @bcom11 that made me laugh. get ya shout on

  • WHEW !!! STILL AS OVERWHELMING AS THAT NIGHT IT WAS ON TV

  • @chmaunzman Agreed, especially when that Scandinavian happens to be Nina Stemme.

  • I love them to be Scandinavian. Or jessye Norman. Germans can't do it nowadays...
