This is me taking free-kicks Ronaldo style. Keep in mind that my backyard is about 15 yards long, so I had to either keep my shots down or hit my neighbors garage and get the rebound (the reason why I used 3 balls was because I kept kicking them over).

Ronaldo's way of kicking is very confusing, because he does it so quickly that its difficult to tell whether he kicks it with his laces or with the side of his foot. The truth is, its a combination. You kick it like its the side of your foot, but you also have to lock your ankle and keep your toe down, plus you have to come across the ball a little bit (like you do when you kick a knuckle-ball). Its way too difficult too describe, so just watch and observe closely. I did it in barefeet so that you could see exactly what part of the foot should hit the ball. Not all of these are great, but there are few good examples here.

I'll try to make one at a field with my cleats on later.

It's probably the follow through. Make sure you really get your leg high.

To get the idea, stand up and (while keeping your ankle locked) try to knee yourself in the face. For me, I've never actually kicked myself so I think its safe. ; /

That's what you're kicking motion should look like. It's impossible to get backspin if you can knee your face on the follow-through!
