Wind As An Energy Alternative / Educational video. Department of Energy. Produce by the Solar Energy Research Institute. Wind: An Energy Alternative. This program looks at the history and uses of wind power, used for centuries by humans to move boats, pump water and grind grain including discussions on efficiency, problems in the urban environment, experimental systems and windmill use across the United States. Producer: Department of Energy. Creative Commons license: Public Domain.

Surprisingly good short film about wind energy. What makes it valuable is the interviews with Marcellus Jacobs (a builder of wind turbines in the 1930s) and Ted Finch (whose efforts got the concept of net metering legally acceptable in the US). It's interesting to note that one of the people listed in the credits, Paul Gipe, is still active in the industry. He's now a leading author on the subject. His website is http://www.wind-works.org

  • Very informative video there! Wind energy has been used for centuries for various purposes... and has recently increased in popularity. As energy demands continue to increase, companies are looking to invest in renewable sources of energy to meet the requirements. Companies such as Pacific Crest Transformers manufacture custom built energy transformers for a range of industry verticals including the Wind energy sector.

  • Canadian Tire had a home owners kit but it is discontinued I believe, unfortunate as I would invest in a feasable type of renewable energy I could install on my home myself.

  • It's not efficient enough for mass power production. The wind farms that do exist now are all subsidised by the government. Other wise they would operate at a loss. You can use far less land space and locate it near the area that needs power by building a nuclear or clean coal plant and get far more energy. A wind farm takes up far more land by its very nature. Then it has to be placed far away from the customer and thus more land and materials is required to run the power to the users.
