@doctorw2 Illusion or not has nothing to do with statue or amulets. Any person can have illusion one way or another. Even if one is praying in silence with the absence of any forms can also have illusion. It is one's mind and how well one can control oneself. Even if one is praying to the statue of Buddha or holding an amulet to pray and do meditation can also achieve enlightenment.

@video1688 therein lies the danger forms are illusion they are abstract concepts detached from the reality of truth. to pray in silence with the abscence of any forms brings the mind in harmony and focus with true reality and helps one achieve nirvana at its deeper level. the buddha is a pure enlightened mind not a statue carved by someones concept or perception that is a great hinderance to the spirtual path.

It is like going to a temple without the statue of Buddha representation, people will feel odd praying to the air. The true fact is that the faith and belief we have with our prayers that help us to overcome obstacles and protection. The form of statues and amulets help us to focus in our prayers.

@video1688 the statue is not the buddha and an amulet can not help improve ones situation or protect one from evil. in early buddhism there were no statues,pictures, or amulets because attachment to forms causes the mind to sleep in illusion and that must be avoided at all costs. i do not understand why buddhists today have statues in temples or bless amulets this is something that obscures the truth.

@doctorw2 When we go to temple to pray, we look upon the mighty Buddha as we pray for blessing and protection in words or in mind. Whether it is the statue of the mighty Buddha or just an amulet in our hands, we focus on our prayers in words or in mind. A material object like the amulet or the statue does not cause harm to anyone. A wrong thought or doing that will cause harm to oneself or others. It is the bad desire that poison oneself from illusion and not the amulet or the statue of Buddha.

@video1688 no, that is an incorrect view, prayer is the word and what proceeds a word is a thought which is much more powerfull than any amulet which is a material object it doesnt matter if its blessed by holy man or not it is a form of attachment that causes harm becuase it runs counter to the teachings of buddhism. the form of anything is illusion and shadow and to be attached to it cuases the poison of desire to be lodged in ones mind.

@doctorw2 One has to have faith and belief in Buddha to repel evil spirits. Renting of amulets help to prevent from being possessed by evil spirits. The value of amulet cannot be judge or compare with sand since amulets are being chanted and blessed by high spiritual monks. As said, it is individual view of opinion but only when you have witnessed or experience with amulet then you will understand. Saying amulet is worthless is like saying prayer is useless.

Amulets are being rent by people who need help like protection against evil spirits or changing their lives for better living. It is individual opinion in view of amulet as it does not infringe the buddhist ethics as said.
