At FanExpo 2011, our 2D artist Britt Newstead painted this portrayal of an Spartan hoplite defeating an Athenian hoplite. She has also been kind enough to record a commentary track to give us some insight into how she works.

  • If Britt reads this, I feel she should skip the linework and go straight into "painting", so to speak, because I think she's much stronger at that. The lines could in fact be a constricting factor, creating a situation where the painter feels a need to stick within them, or a fear to diverge from what was previously drawn. But anyway, I know it's a learning process, so "mistakes" (what's really right or wrong anyway?) are normal, just keep at it!

  • Thanks for making this Britt. It was very useful to hear your thoughts from all of the stages of the painting. Also thanks for the CGTextures tip; I'll definitely look into them.

  • Really good drawing,

Looking forward for the next game! :)
