Such a mix of good and bad. Amazing score. Some FX like the lasers were bad, but others, like the second reactor going up as seen from the bridge, are FAR better than the ships crashing in the Death Star battle of Star Wars.
As I recall, when Borgnine played Dom in Airwolf, he was a lot stronger than the character he played in this film. But since this is a Disney film, and one of the classics, I can't complain.
I have to say the special effects are appalling, even by the standards of the day. The first Star Trek movie was the same year, and had far superior effects.
Actually the motion control system used by Disney for this film was far superior to the version used for Star Trek. ILM wanted too much money for the use of their rig so Disney created their own. Called A.C.E.S the motion control system that combined with the Mattescan system allowed both model stand and matte painting scanning via a camera.
The system may have been better, but the guys running it were not. Douglas Trumbull led the effects team on Star Trek the Motion Picture (and on 2001) and the effectswork still holds up today. Some scenes near the end are aweinspiring. Apart from the asteroid through the corridor scene this film's effects are substandard. Just look at the laser beams and the robot design!
Well it could also be because the Star Trek series has been remastered too. But its really not important. I personally think most of the effects in The Black Hole are not substandard but adequate for a stand alone film from a studio that had not created such a film before. Lets just say were at an impasse.
***Whatever anyone thinks of this little unknown film; it's captivating, intriguing in it's build up. One thing leads to the next discovery and it works in terms of "FLOW". So what if there are a few scientific mistakes. These days with the pop eye candy in movie effects and posing pretty actors with their ultra scientific logic; this film kills them all in terms of telling a GOOD Story. The book of this film is very interesting and well worth it in finding details not covered in the film.****
Have you heard about conversation of momentum? (the momentum before = the momentum after) Momentum = Mass * Velcoity
i.e. Let's say a meteorite has a mass of 80 kg with a velocity at 10 m/s heading towards the ship; then blasting it could make 8 smaller ones (with each one 10 kg), and each one heading towards the ship with the average speed of 10 m/s heading towards the ship. Just as dangerous don't you agree?
Blasting those meteorites is that a wise idea. The bad doctor made the right move.
