Igo KRANOWSKI (né Izaak Kranc) violinist, composer, text writer and singer performing also under a pseudonym Igo Krischer. Born in 1912 in Lwow, died probably in a nazi camp Majdanek, in 1943.

He was very popular in Warsaw as a leader of his own band and also the solo performer (singing and violin playing) in fashionable nightclubs and restaurants „Esplanada, „Polonia, „Adria. Tango „Bajka (A Fairytale) composed by him and with his lyrics ( „A fairytaleits what you were for me) became a great hit in early 1930s and was also popular in Germany under the title „Märchen.
After German invasion on Poland in autumn 1939, he fled to Lwow, where he established a dance band, performing in cafe „Vogue. He stayed in Lwow until the onset of the Soviet-Nazi war in June 1941, and for unknown reasons he returned to Warsaw.

In the Getto he shortly emerges as performer in „Melody Palace, to vanish in 1943, together with his wife also a composer and a pianist, Paulina Braun. Knowing the circumstances of her death in the annihilation camp of Majdanek, we can suspected Igo Krakowski died with her.

  • Thank you, you are the greatest! When I was 8 years old back in1962 my father would play this beautiful 78rpm record and we would all just sit around and listen to it in Chicago.

    My father and mother came from Poland after WW2.

    When I listen to it now it is like a portal to my disceased family and believe it gives

    me a spiritual and physical boost in life to be sure.

    A very powerful song and sweet.
