HI , if one isn't a flash instrument player and wants to record a Pass in Protools at say, half speed, how can thast be done? I know that Logic has this feature.

If you hold SHIFT and SPACEBAR pro tools will playback at half speed, so perhaps holding SHIFT and record will do the same.

hey i'm just curious, and sorry if this is a stupid question, but what does the range knob do exactly on a gate? ._.

Not stupid at all. It tells the gate how much to slam down on (or close) the gate. The higher the ration, the tighter it closes off the audio.

This is probably only a very minority of people, but since I among this group I will share my fix. I use ableton which doesn't have a built in expander. Found a free one for PPC macs called the Floorfish Expander. I love it and it works great.

You are both right. It just depends on what the song/track dictates.

So excited to go home and try the Expander. I always used the gate on the snare, and it gated all the ghost notes and other necessary hits, so I was very frustrated.. Hopefully, I get a better snare sound now! Check out my videos for drum tracks.. Any advices will be very appreciated!

You wouldn't need it if the samples you were using didn't have any bleed happening.

Would you suggest gating even if you use programmed drums?

Since you have all those percussion channels available to you, can I assume there are several mics on that drum kit or just one? still getting familiar with miking drums

If you used a VST plugin and played drums via synth this isn't needed right?

The gate dictates how much gain reduction the gate will do when its gating. It basically sets a limit to the amount of gain reduction.
