In the end it comes down to drawing a white rectangle where the core of the lightsaber is supposed to be, blurring the edges (best to have multiple layers, with different amounts of blur) and changing the colors.
So you can use any tools that allows you to edit individual frame. A lot of people use After Effects, because once you know how it works, it works fast.

I can dig it... not too bad! I love seeing anyone working with sabers that have some actual weight to them. Speaking of which, click on my ID or this link--you guys will TRIP!! It's 100% live, no rotoscoping... but not MR sabers...

When I do lightsaber rotoscoping, I use an easy program called "LSmaker". It's really cool, and great fighting by the way. =D
