Wonder if that additive called acetone gives better fuel economy for your car? Find out!

Sorry about the obvious spelling error at the beginning. Overall, even with the alleged 2.45% increase in fuel economy, it doesn't make financial sense to use acetone since 1 quart costs about $10 here.

  • How much weight did your "full tank" add vs. the 4gal. run? You failed to take into account the weight of the full tank. Your runs should've been with a full load of fuel. Interesting though, none the less.

  • @fast34me - the amount of the fill was an extra 40 pounds - about a 2% increase in total vehicle weight.

  • Hey did you take into account that the weight of the car was less with the acetone...as you weight reduce you should get better mileage...next time fill up before each run, this would give you a more acurate results. Great effort!

  • @kent636 - a single run was only about 11 km in length so only a small amount of fuel was used. 55mpg is about 4.3L/100km so a single run used about 473ml of fuel... less than 2 cups ;)

  • How did u even get 57 MPG? What kind of car do u have?

  • It was a 1997 Geo Metro with a 1.0L 3 cylinder engine with a 5 speed manual (the most fuel efficient car in Canada for '97). At 50-mph, the car has to push less wind, so that's why it got mid-50s in fuel economy.

  • You neglecting to take the weight of the gas into effect.

  • I'm using acetone to clean sensitive electronic circuit boards for years. Whoever told You that acetone is corrosive is not serious at all. If You are really worried about corrosives in the fuel add about 0.5% two-stroke oil. You could add 1% methanol if You suspect water in the fuel tank, but add no more as methanol is powerful fuel and is better suited for low compression ratio engines. 0.2 to 0.3% of acetone will not eat away rubber parts of fuel supply system.

  • It takes gas to haul gas

  • @nathanlorimer - I'm from Regina Saskatchewan ;)

  • @fast34me it wont make that much differences. Also he is going constant speed, not accelerating.

  • Dammit! and I thought this Acetone would work. Thanks for ruining this secret for me just like my dad told me one Xmas night that he was the jolly saint Nick.

  • oh my gosh, it's so magical :D

  • yeah 2 to 3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas. By using three times too much I'm surprised it didn't decrease the efficiency below using straight gas.

  • I enjoyed the experiments. You are supposed to put about 2 ounces of acetone for every 10 gallons of gas for the best results. It also helps emissions.
