Though he may not look the part, Steve McCreary of Collings Guitars had an interesting job prior to his work at Collings as a character in Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately, when Steve won a match and was instructed to "Finish" his opponent by the demonic Sega narrator, he'd cover Sub-Zero, Reptile or some such opponent in varnish. Steve fits in much better at Collings Guitars where he gave us an overview of guitar and mandolin finishing techniques. Please don't use this knowledge to cause fatalities on your video game opponents! And see more at gearwire.com.

I have to agree with him. Even on electric guitar the difference is quite marked. And I dont even claim to have a good ear.

I'd like to hear his comments regarding Nitro VS Acrylic Laquer....the latter(IMHO) being a superior coating that is a lot less prone to checking, with the same film build.

spray paint on an electric guitar? How is that comparable to lacquer on an acoustic. And besides, Eddie Van Halen's sound is so effect driven who knows what his guitar sounds like. Don't get me wrong, Eddie's a great guitarist, but you're comparing oranges and date squares

I don't understand why they always say that the finish affects the sound, Eddy Van Halen's guitar sounded amazing and he only used regular spray paint, as a matter of fact his sound is probably as good as it gets! People 80% of the quality of the sound is attributed to your amp.

@ekim2003 There are some other makers like huss and dalton and bourgeois who don't make *any* dogs, but they don't have the range of guitars that collings has.
