I ordered some estate pipes from ebay as an experiment to see if I could refurbish them without tools and make them smokeable. This is not so much a "how to" video, but more of a "how I did" video. Hopefully you can pick up a few tips and give it a try. Part 2 of 3

  • Great series on pipe restoration. I've been looking for a few videos like this! I love your idea for restoring the stems. Great shine, without using any chemicals or compounds. What is the ratio of the solution you mention to do the first soak on the bowl? Again, thanks for the vids, lots of useful information!!

  • For leeching the bowl I use coarse salt and a clear alcohol, which here the easiest thing to get is vodka! There are good videos on salt and alcohol bowl treatment by SmokeRingsPipeDreams if you look up his videos. For the stems I soak in household bleach. Some only need a few hours, others will need an all day or overnight soak. Rinse them well or even soak in clean water for another day. then get to buffing! Thanks for watching.

  • Nice series of videos there Alan - I have had to refurbish some of my older pipes which I had neglected. Could you explain your bleach treatment on the stems for me? Thanks in anticipation !

  • I forgot to mention - you should dab some vaseline on the tenon and logo of the stem before putting in the bleach to protect them.

    Thanks again

    Alan

  • good job well done mate.

    Salam

  • Hi Salam - just watched your New year Jake Hackert video (again!). You mentioned the dull stem on your Boswell. Have these videos helped? Did you get it shined up again?

    Cheers

    Alan

  • Impressive results!

  • @pokiebaron Thanks again Alan, lots of great info in your vids. I'm now on the hunt for a really tired old pipe to see just how far I can bring one back. That's a really good looking Canadian by the way. :-) Always nice to restore one and bring it back. Take care.

  • Thanks very much for this Alan - will try it out on some pipes I'm going to r-furbish and send to a mate in Brazil!

  • When the stems are black again, rinse them for quite a while under running water, then put them in another container with clean water for another 24 hrs. Rinse again, then dry off. The stems will be black but will be dull and feel rough. Now follow the videos to use the nail files and buffers to return to a gloss shine. If you want to remove teeth marks you may need to use a coarser file then move to finer grits before final buffing. I didn't use any wax or compounds, the shine is natural.

  • Hi Paul - thanks for watching. There used to be another series of pipe refurbishment videos on youtube by laughter1099 where I learnt this, but he has now closed his channel. Basically put some household bleach in a container (I used an old ice-cream tub) and steep the stems in the raw bleach for 24 hrs. Make sure the stems are covered in the bleach. This will remove all the oxidation and return even the most brown stems back to black.
