Historian Mark Crispin Miller wrote, back in the 1980's, in his analysis of "1984", that George Orwell didn't understand the potential intimacy of television. He thought of it as a combination of movies and radio, so he didn't conceive of how Television Programming (Miller's double meaning) might come to be.
