As part of its series on veterans from some of the world's most brutal and forgotten conflicts Al Jazeera travelled to Russia.

Despite being the Soviet Union's largest military operation since the second world war, the decade-long war in Afghanistan is regarded by many as a humiliation and the Soviet 'Vietnam'.

However many veterans are still physically and psychologically damaged by their time in Afghanistan and say they do not receive adequate support upon their return.

  • OMG...

Man, I look at this documentary & than I look at the war that's now occurring in Afghanistan. Its the same freakin situation the U.S. & its allies are in as the Soviets were before!

And you can be pretty sure the end of this war will also be the same as the Soviet's one.

  • I'm not fond of Russia but I respect the soldiers in this video who went and served their country. I realize they have the same hurts and issues Americans have.

  • These Russian vets reminds me of U.S vets that served in Vietnam....alone & alienated.

  • @overkill2010 thank you americana.

  • What will be the end of this capitalistic system is yet unknown. Its demise is inevitable. But, what I know with overwhelming certainty is that the successor will be even worse than it. Eventually, the humans will have destroyed their habitat and when the last two will kill each other for left over food, this tragedy will be forgotten by the universe.
