The Muslim Affinity group working in solidarity with Occupy Oakland has had a consistent presence at Occupy Oakland from the beginning of the encampment. On Friday October 28, we organized our first Friday Prayer at Occupy Oakland where we were joined by 50 to 70 Muslims and over 100 of our community allies of all different faith backgrounds. In this Khutba titled "Justice is a Divine Command" Dr. Hatem Bazian shows how the struggle for truth and justice of the Occupy movement is a divinely inspired command that is the highest calling of all religions.

Dr. Hatem Bazian, received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Islamic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Currently, Bazian is a senior lecturer in the Departments of Near Eastern and Ethnic Studies.

Inspired by the growing peoples movements throughout the Muslim world and in the United States, the Bay Area Muslim Community Organizing Network is an alliance of a diverse group of Muslims who are working to build grassroots networks to help bring about spiritual, social, economic and political justice. After ten plus years of rampant Islamophobia and wars against our communities it is time we stand up and organize with the righteous people of this country to work for a better collective future.

The two overarching goals of our affinity group are:

1) As it relates to our own community we must deal with the trauma of the last ten years as we move forward to end Islamophobia, and wars against Muslims, while working towards unity in the Muslim community.

2) We hope to engage the Occupy Movement as a spiritual voice as we work with other faith communities who live their lives focused on social justice through the paradigm of faith and spirituality. Also we hope to bring to light the continuing Islamophobia as we work to gain allies to help us end the racism facing Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities in the United States.

We encourage Muslims throughout the country to take part in the Occupy movement, and to join Muslim affinity groups working towards similar goals as we have stated above. Please reach out to us if you would like to join us or need any help organizing!
