In 1996, Austin was entered into King of the Ring. He made it to the finals, where he faced Jake "The Snake" Roberts. When Austin defeated Jake, he made that famous speech, taunting Jake about how he tried to use religion to steer him into victory. This is where Austin came up with that phrase. He took the phrase "John 3:16 says" and put his own twist on it, saying the famous words, "Austin 3:16 says i just whooped your ass." Austin was supposed to be heel but the crowd still liked him after.
