This Super 8 home movie documents the existence of "The Nine Pond," a well-known geographical landmark along Belcrest Road just south of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Md. This film was taken in February or March of 1968 and shows the Nine Pond as it was when Zippy1862 was 15 years old. The exact site of the old Nine Pond still exists today as it was back then -- completely wooded and overgrown -- except the Nine Pond is no longer there. I have been able to document that the Nine Pond was known as the Fish Pond on the Christian Heurich estate/farm that included what is now Prince George's Plaza shopping center.

  • Yes, there were two circular ponds beyond the tail of the '9' (toward the community center. I did take a little bit of footage of at least one of those circular ponds. I took this at 15 years old -- one of the first movies with my new movie camera.

  • Zippy: Thanks for this. I remember the 9-Pond very well. Walked around there a lot as a kid. I recall that there were at least two additional shallow, circular ponds adjacent to the 9-Pond, which I beleve were covered by the far end of the parking lot for the Presidential buildings. Your movie may have shown these ponds, too, but it was a hard to tell.

  • Correction, .....they built the two matching bldgs, with one on Toledo Terrace (The Presidential Bldg) and the other next to the first on East-West Hwy. I recall the Royal Arms Restaurant in that first bldg.

  • WOW!!!! I see that one white office bldg. I also recall when that was the only bldg there, before they built the other two matching bldgs down on Toledo Terrace. Sadly, the fourth one that was planned in the original architectural model was never built. The scale model of what the whole complex was supposed to look like used to be on display in that Presidential Bldg on the 2nd floor. It may still be on display there. Its nice to see what the Plaza property looked like before development.
