Martyn Wyndham-Read sings and plays guitar with Iris Bishop playing accordion and concertina at the Royal Oak, Lewes on Feb 4th 2010

Martyn has been involved with folk music for over forty years. In his late teens he left his mother's farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station Emu Springs in South Australia. He headed off to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early1960's.
Back to England in 1967 Martyn was asked by Bert Lloyd to be part of the album 'Leviathan' on the Topic label and soon after he started recording for Bill Leader and touring extensively worldwide.

  • I know he's been taking part in folk music events all his life, unfortunately not the most popular kind of music nowadays!!

  • Saw him at the Ringwood Folk Club recently. As always .a stunning and moving performance. Always has sold out concerts in Australia.People who appreciate him out here always support him well.

  • He'll be at National Folk in Canberra at Easter if you want to hear him - them. We are very lucky in Australia that he visited again this year. I went to stunning concert in Melbourne a week or so ago.

  • seen Martyn not so long ago in Edinburgh, a first class performer with a lovely voice, do go and see him if you get the chance.

  • I wish I could sing this song like Martyn W-R, SG!

  • Great version Martyn and as always a fantastic voice, performance and a true gentleman. I'd love to hear you sing Grace Darling or The Last Great Grain Race from the same singer song writer Stan Graham.

  • It's a great song and it's sung even better. I love it!! A real sea song..

  • one of the nicest persons you will ever meet.

    Good on ya, Martyn

  • I really love this music! What a beautiful song and performance.

  • He is English, but sings Australian songs almost exclusively. I was fortunate enough to have seen him about 25 years ago in Toronto, and he was just as great as he is here. I don't know why he isn't more well known, he's just as good as many other performers, and better than a good many. It may be his choice of material, it may not be seen as quite as accessible as others'.

  • i find ireland very inward looking when it comes to singers from other countries and I'm from an Irish family!
