By 1942 Brazil had 36 merchant ships sunk by German U-boats in Brazilian waters, being then forced to break its neutrality. 1943 Brazil officially declared war against Nazi regime.
The Brazilian performance between 1943 until the half of 1944 was intent in the defense of the south Atlantic, executing 251 convoys escorts in Brazilian waters and 70 in international waters. It lost 3 escort ships and 468 members of the crew, 36 merchant ships and 469 men plus 502 passengers.
It sank 12 U-Boats, U-513, U-199, U-161, U-128, U-591, U-863, U-177, U-598, U-164/507, U-590/662, U-848 and U-604 all in brazilian waters.
The Brazilian army sent to Italy 25,445 soldiers.
KIA: 500 soldiers
Wounded: 3000 soldiers
POW: 20,573 German soldiers.
The Brazilian Air Force also acted from September 1944 untill April of 1945 in Italy with 1° Grupo de Caça(fighter squadron) based on the city of Tarquínia.
Carrying through 2,546 sorties losing 5 pilots for German flak.
