AA landing in Tegucigalpa, prior to May 2009 984 ft extension increasing the length of the runway from 6112 ft to its current 7096 ft., combined with further blasting of hill on approach which somewhat decreases the risks and approach angle.

It's not the landing that one should be scared of. What is scary is stepping out of the airplane and being in that country.

I just flew into Toncontin last week on TACA Airlines. I went into the flight with the typical, naive American assumption of "I'm flying on an airline based in a poor country, I bet the pilots are under-trained and not as good as American pilots". But our pilots' approach and landing into TGU was, hands down, the most impressive piloting work I've ever experienced on any airline, ever. So much respect for TACA now, as well as all other carriers that land there.

a TACA pilot holds the record for the only pilot to land an airliner safely and intact outside of an airstrip. They flew it off after minor repairs investigations. The pilot responsible had only one eye too!

Because That Is Their Native Country, They Make The Landing Hard To Give Them A Little Challenge :)

However you have to consider that TACA has had a very low accident/incident rate in the last few years AND pilots landing at Toncontin have to have special/specific qualifications in order to be clear to fly a plane that's going to land at that airport, that not for nothing is the 2nd most dangerous of the world! You can't say all TACA pilots are good, but all TACA pilots landing at Toncontin are damn good!

Landing once safely doesn't give you any guidance to the quality of the pilots. TACA aren't particularly safe, though admittedly the pilots face much tougher flying conditions than in the US.

Damn that approach looks nerve racking, even for experience pilots that must be no walk in the park.
