President of the Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been conferred the highest national award "Sri Lanka Mithra Vibushana". (13/02/2008)

The Sri Lankan government decided to confer this award on the Maldivian leader based on the exceptional friendship and solidarity of the Maldivians with the people of Sri Lanka for three decades. Mr. Gayoom had also made a significant contribution to South Asian solidarity and regional co-operation especially on issues pertaining to the environment. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa conferred the award on the Maldivian leader at a special ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat. The Maldivian leader expressed his gratitude to the Sri Lankan government for honouring him. He emphasised his support to consolidate bi-lateral ties between the two countries. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapakse, the Maldivian First Lady Nazreena Gayoom, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and many parliamentarians were present.
