I love this song. The big picture Sam's driving at obviously is that he didnt know what he had in his relationship until it was too late, and now he regrets it so much, he's looking for someone just like her in other women. The way I interpret the part, "I preferred the sea and tussling in the waves" as looking for just sex in the relationship, but I can also see that as preferring freedom of the sea, rather than being confined to the safety of the waves.
