I thought this simple but beautiful piece was the perfect accompaniment to a sonnet I wrote called, At Portichol. The poem was originally inspired by Josie Elias' Moonrise Over Portichol photo. Portichol is a small island off the Costa Blanca, Javea, Spain. One of my favourite places to go walking!
Here are the words to the poem:
The sea has never looked so calm I think.
The moon, white phoenix, rising from the sands
and you and I standing on the brink
where gulls wheel slowly and the headland
casts its shadows from red cliffs into green.
So deep, the pockets of the sea, so full
of bones. The lighthouse winks its silent schemes
and you and I still standing being lulled
by other tides that lead to other moons.
The sky is vast, you say, where are the stars?
Where love and friendship meet, but all too soon
the smile I offer plunges into dark.
As we walk back, two friends, along the cliff
the sea dreams on while love is set adrift.
