Begin in downdog with the feet touching. The two legs are going to work as a single unit now: inner thighs hugging, plenty of enthusiasm in the entire length of the leg once you leave the ground.
Imagine this: the ceiling has been lowered and if you were to jump high enough, you could smack your bottom into the ceiling. Practice this approach with the legs staying actively together, arms firming straight, plenty of length in the neck and width in the shoulders. Careful to not let the elbows buckle.
Note: practice this with the wall behind you 'just in case' you go too far and flip over. Think pike before you think handstand. Try to nail the "L" shape first THEN tackle the handstand part.
