La Fête de la Musique was held in Valletta on the initiative of the Tourism, Environment and Culture Parliamentary Secretariat, the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the Malta Tourism Authority and the French Embassy.
The purpose of this event was to celebrate the longest day of the year through music, turning it as it may be into the longest most enjoyable night of music and dance.
There was one main stage where bands performed, and which was located in upper Merchants Street close to the Auberge D'Italie. A variety of musical genres, with performances was laid on.
The day chosen for the Maltese Fête de la Musique coincides with similar festivals all over the world. This annual event which originated in France in 1981 has now been exported to all Francophone countries and beyond.
The purpose of this event was to promote music by giving amateurs and professional musicians space to perform together.
The title Fête de la musique has actually a double entendre in its homophonic version. It means making music in a festival of music thus promoting its own goal. Free concerts are organised around the world, making all genres of music accessible to the public. This year, the festival had both local as well as foreign performing artistes. Through the French Embassy a guest of honour, Matthieu Chédid, who is a well-known multi-instrumentalist, and has a great following in France, was brought over.
