This is a closeup view of the failed static test firing of the SpaceX Falcon 9 first stage on the launch pad March 9, 2010. The 9 rocket engines were supposed to fire for 3.5 seconds. The rocket aborted at T-2 seconds, during what's called "spin start". The failure at this point caused the vehicle to abort ignition and isolate the engines from the fuel system. The flames were residual kerosene and liquid oxygen being burned off.

There is no sound on this Air Force remote camera view.

  • Thanks for recording this and posting it here. Can I ask what you used to record the stream?

  • There's a program called Net Transport (NetXFer) and another one Applian Media Catcher. I use both of those if I need to capture streams on the web. There's also a program called VLC Media Player which is good too.

  • It was a good real-life exercise of their abort and safing procedures, so definitely not a waste of time. Same thing has happened to the space shuttle a lot of times over the years.

  • I like that space x is testing there rocket thoroughly. Also to the people who do not believe that private space companies can do well i have one thing to say to you.... You are an idiot that doesn't crap about spaceflight!

  • Test fire was completed successfully in March 13th.

  • Damn sure better work, soon. It's going to be the only thing we've got.

  • As a long-time Sci-Fi reader since 1962, I am gratified to know I will probably live to see a private venture make it to space,

These guys are really giving it a good go, and I hope they can continue as well as they have done up to now.

  • SHOOT IT OFF! SHOOT IT OFF!

  • Got it, thanks. I'm familiar with VLC but was unable to dig up a source URL that worked. Will have to give those two a try.

  • I wish they had this camera angle on for the test today :/
