I also had "no preference" on my dogtags when I was in the navy . Does our military still refuse unbelief as a preference.

No, it's convincing yourself, by faith, that death is an illusion. Instead of actually dying, you will enter utopia with Jesus (and or other God(s)).
Many bigots in the military don't think atheists will risk their lives for anyone or anything, if they think this life is the only one that matters.
What the faithful is saying here is that the cause they are fighting for, and fighting for their country, is not enough. They need supernatural faith in order to act bravely.
