I had several cultural activist groups send me the worst examples of minstrelsy they could find and I made of collage of examples from the present placed next to examples from the past. I'm trying to illustrate the racism (conscious or unconscious) behind playing Indian on a visual and emotional level.

  • These are all very good books. Knowledge is power.

  • RE: Pocahontas

We juxtaposed her next to Little Black Sambo and a Nuage stereotypical depiction of a sexualized native woman to make you think about the similarities.

Read the work of Bea Medicine on the real Pocahontas. The Disney version is offensive.

If you don't see why you need to examine your indoctrinaiton. Try googling Pocahontas and stereotype. I can't post links. Sorry for the late response.

  • Awesome! They should use this in the schools!

  • Thank you all for your words of support. We intended for this piece to be provakative and to challenge people to think beyond their indoctrination. It was made for educational purposes only, so we would be thrilled if it were used as a teaching tool!

  • Are you native?

  • picture of Bam Bam (RiP) at 2.17

  • a few of these aren't fair. I recognize the woman at 1:34 and the picture is from the Seattle pow-wow, where numerous native Americans were selling everything from thong underwear to head dresses, and even shot glasses. Several ancient, indigenous cultures have used the mohawk hairstyle. Punkers don't shave mohawks to imitate native americans.

  • While I definitely agree on most of this, some of these were actually depictions of a Celtic tribal tradition. @allisonforfornsed: your comments are rude and disrespectful to both cultures. My biggest issue with all of these fusses is that there are so many gray areas and a lot of downright attacking of one side or other when I believe it's most important to respect each other & remember that sacred rites are not for commercial sale, whether it's Native American, Celtic, or anything else.

  • HEY! You see that person with the mohawk in the video? Historians record the the CELTIC peoples often wore their hair like that! Stop trying to take everything from drums to tribes to ancient hairstyles, etc. away from white people! We had those things A LONG TIME AGO! You're obviously an ignorant an uneducated little dirt blower who needs to go learn about WHITE PEOPLE's TRIBAL HISTORY! It's the history of Europe. OR ARE YOU TO STUPID TO READ SOME HISTORY BOOKS?

  • native americans are miserable self-pitying people who want to own spirituality and tribalism. They want to whine and cry and obsess. And worst of all- they want to make laws telling people what they can and can't do w/ their own faith and religion. Lemme tell you something: sellin' sweat lodge is one thing: but when they get to telling us celts and asatruar that we can't honor our own tribal heritage, they got another thing coming. legally.

  • Your video is thought provoking. I will openly admit, as an African-American, that your use of the minstrel show images felt a bit demeaning to my cultural experience, but- as a function of the Higher Good- I can't see a better way to convey the frustration that you must feel. Well done.

  • Truley is to the comment below, Pocahontas is my 15th Direct Great Grandmother...

  • Very weird.. Who would go through all y'alls comments and mark the ones in agreement of the message in this video as spam?
