@3994257 A belt will squeal if the belt is worn or the tensioner has lost some of it's tension. If the tensionor pulley is bad, they'll wobble, freeze or sometimes even self destruct.

I have 2004 mazda6 with 3.0L duratec engine. There's a whinning screaming noise comming from the serpentine belt area. I just replaced my tensioner and belts 2 yrs ago. I began noticing the noise during winter cold starts but the noise will slowly fade an go away after 5-10 mins when the engine gets warm. On summer months, it never makes this noise. What should I replace first? I used gator back serpentine belt not the original dayco brand.

@A10ZA You should inspect the belt to see if it's cracked, and then replace it if it is. You may also want to check the belt tensioner to see if it's in it's normal range.

If I'm only replacing the belt, do I just take the old belt out by loosening the tensioner, then re-applying a belt?

@baldchicken11 Yes. You would need to lift the belt tensioner up and off of the belt to remove the tension, and then put your new belt on. Here's a video that will show you how to do this. Hope this helps you out. youtube.com/watch?v=MOjHRxUfCpU&feature=plcp&context=C3981e52UDOEgsToPDskK3k50RZZ_mGsyKoDoSiA-E

I had a new belt and idler pulley put on about 2 years ago, now I'm getting some squealing again. It only happens at low speeds, and if I turn off my blower, heater, radio and lights it goes away. I'm pretty sure it's the alternator starting to seize, what do you think?

@frankvonfrauner If you stand outside of the car with the hood up and have someone start it for you, it may be easier to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Hope this helps you out.
