Animation of the SpaceX Dragon commercial spacecraft touching down on land. It also has parachutes for water landings.

Video is edited out of the CCDev 2 promo and enhanced using video filters.

The cargo version starts cargo resupply flights to the ISS later this year, and it's a candidate to also start flying up to 7 NASA astronauts per flight the ISS.

Commercial passenger flights could also be going to Bigelow Aerospace's commercial space stations, some of which could be larger than the ISS.

  • @mrteemumilto Parachutes have a place to straighten/slow the craft down, but Curiosity won't use them all the way to the ground.

  • @kenhes They have to work. Curiority is going to land with them.

  • @DumbYankies No doubt SpaceX has an eye on Mars landing....where parachutes won't work in the thin atmosphere.

  • No, it isn't.

Dragon's LES is internal, lightweight and reusable. It's also not single purpose since it can be used to land on other bodies. MAX is external, heavy, single use abd single purpose.

  • Check out the NASA - "MAX LAUNCH ESCAPE SYSTEM" it was tested on Orion before the traditional escape tower. Its essentially the same thing.

  • Its a bit brave to ditch the parachute. If one of the retros fails then its too low and too late to get the chute out. better to use the soyuz approach, chute till the ground then retros for the last meter to cushion.

  • I read a few weeks ago that nasa, while trying to resurrect the moon launch program , is going to have its capsule escape system work just like this. I wonder where they got the idea. They should just go with Spacex and save money for better uses in exploration.

  • SpaceX told SpaceFlightNow that these landing thrusters & their systems will start ground testa in May, 2012.

A bientôt.

  • This looks photoshoped (^_^)
