For those people who need to take a blood thinner to prevent blood clots there is a new medication that has been approved by the FDA. It's called dabigatran, trade name Pradaxa, and it has been found to be at least as effective as the old standby Warfarin when it comes to preventing blood clots. The real advantage to Pradaxa is that there is only one standard dose taken daily and there is no need for dose adjustment due to diet. This is a big advantage and means a lot fewer blood tests for those needing there blood thinned. It was recently approved and may not be available everywhere yet. And, as a new medication caution should always be used. But it does look promising.
