STUDENTS PROTEST AGAINST TUITION FEES HIKE

London witnessed the biggest protest of the year. Hundreds and thousands of agitated students protested in the freezing weather against the tuition fees rise. The protest commenced at Malet street and demonstrators marched towards Parliament square. Even though the protest was peaceful in the beginning, violence erupted when students were cordoned off in separate groups.

Police in riot gear stood shoulder to shoulder and kettled students in the parliament square. Students shouted slogans against the government and burnt posters. Groups of students retaliated by throwing paintballs, placards, sticks, fire crackers. Trouble started when students tried to break the barrier. Certain protesters also vandalised police vans and properties. A few arrests were made. An official report on the number of injured was unavailable, but a few police men and students were injured in the riots. The vote was cast and a majority voted for the rise in tuition fees unto 9000£. Shocked students were by then contained in the square by police officers on foot and on horses.

As usual the government had its day and the voice of the people remained unheard.
