Harnesses, Fall Prevention Systems, etc. are not a replacement for common sense....
In most cases, they just get in the way and impede work. I'm a 3rd generation Contractor, I've never used one and never will... and I'm still here (because I have a brain...)
The worker should have been trained to use his safety gear as a matter of habit. And I instruct any of my workers that you NEVER walk backwards on a construction site.
A restraint lanyard should have been used. Even if he was wearing a shock absorbing lanyard, who was gonna rescue him, before the suspension trauma begins, when he was dangling up in the air?

We have on old saying in the construction industry. If you fall off that roof, consider yourself fired before you hit the ground.
