Part 1 of 3 shorts showing the take off, landing in Paris, and then landing in New York, for the middle bit you'll have to watch the Jimmy Stewart film.
Want to learn more about this phenomenal aviation pioneer? Type "Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle" into the search window and check out Steve Carroll's insightful one-man show about Lindy. Terrific play.
You'll notice that the film after 40 seconds shows the Spirit in flight WITHOUT the nose cone...which was clearly on during the actual flight. The film after 40 seconds was taken on one of the check-out flights on Long Island prior to Lindbergh's departure.
The other unsug heros of this flight were the engineers at Wright Corporation, who designed the modern and reliable J-5 radial engine that was used for this plane. This engine was one of the first to have enclosed rocker arm covers.
The unsung hero of the Lindberg story is Donald Hall, chief design engineer for Ryan Airlines. His calculations and airplane design made the flight possible.
Linberg says in his book that he deliberately had the plane designed with the fuel tank in front (making the view forward difficult) so that if he crashed, the entire weight of the fuel and tank would not crush him.

Because he barely had enough lift to get the heavy, fuel-laden airplane off the ground.

Whoa! This is so cool!!!! I'm reading this part in his book. That sure looked like a bumpy start. Thanks for putting this up!

I know what all the spectators watching that thing taking off were thinking...."that piece of shit's NEVER making it to Paris!"

How come the plane bounced like that an instant before lift off?
