Fifty years ago, on the night of 10 October 1957, Britain was on the brink of an unprecedented nuclear tragedy. A fire ripped through the radioactive materials in the core of Windscale, Britain's first nuclear reactor. Tom Tuohy, the deputy general manager at the site, led the team faced with dealing with a nightmare no-one had thought possible.

"Mankind had never faced a situation like this; there's no-one to give you any advice," he said. Tuohy and his men were confronted by a terrifying dilemma.

If they let the fire burn out, it could spread radioactivity over a large area of Britain. But if they put water on the reactor, they risked turning it into a nuclear bomb that could kill them all.

Now tapes of the inquiry into the accident, heard for the first time in a BBC film, reveal the reasons why the politicians covered up the causes of the accident. Scientists had been warning about the dangers of an accident for some time. The safety margins of the radioactive materials inside the reactor were being further and further eroded.

"They were running much too close to the precipice," says Dr Dunworth, a senior manager in the Nuclear Research Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire, who was one of those highlighting the potential dangers.

But the politicians and the military ignored the warnings; instead they increased demands on Windscale to produce material for an H-bomb.

For 50 years, the official record on the accident has been that the very men who had averted a potentially devastating accident were to blame for causing it.

"I resented it at the time," says Peter Jenkinson, who was an assistant physicist at the reactor, "and I hoped the record would be put straight." After the inquiry, he and his colleagues finally got their wish.

  • Dr.Helen Caldicott is here on youtube and has been fighting nuclear for 40 years now. If you have children or care about our planet then please type her name in and listen to what she has to say.

It IS insanity to allow these generators of death and disease to be built on such a small island. You're NOT being told what is really happening in Japan. Northern Japan is dying; the land will be polluted for hundreds of years. But you won't hear that on the BBC.

I beg you - find out the truth.

  • @telemetry9 Nice comment well put nuclear equals no future

  • brilliant upload . thank you

  • @unseenrecordings Thanks heaps Im glad to see the film getting views we have to learn from the past or we are doomed to repeat it.

  • @madmouse71 Yes indeed. Stiff upper lip!

  • @telemetry9 I am nuclear engineer/scientist :) I work with radioactive materials everyday. Means I know a lot about these issues. Also I would like to visit Fukusima if possible. Ive been to Chernobyl already. NEVER in in entire time of world have nuclear claimed milions of lives.Never. Death toll and deformation to radiation in the whole world is about 50 000. 20 000 are due to USA dropping nuclear bombs on Japan. Trust me I work with this stuff

  • Since you are going to Japan. I would recommend you look at work done by independent scientists regarding car filters.

Going to Japan you risk inhaling and ingesting hot particles that are very much now part of the landscape.

Professor Busby has done a great deal of work in this area and I suggest you don't follow the media dumbing down of reality - but do your own research.

The damage has already been done with nuclear. Millions of dead and deformed human beings are its "legacy".

  • @telemetry9 To be honest, I dont agree, although I respect your opinion. Answer of energy crisis is not going to be solved by banning nuclear power, but much better research in this industry, which will be able to bring us 100% safe reactors and nuclear waste. Yes it is really possible. Physicist have already find this out. It is up to us engineers to develop safe reactors.I am going to Japan in April to research this topic.

  • Secrets and lies were the predominant causal factors in this and the Chernobyl disaster. Things could have been done much more safely, but the secret of how to do that was closely guarded by the Americans. In the Chernobyl disaster, any knowledge of the many previous similar incidents was kept from the people at the plant. Therefore, they had no way of recognizing what such a common failure (sticking control rods) looked like. Like Fukushima, both were avoidable.

  • As British, we can push through this easily with the Union Jack in one hand and a Lee Enfield rifle in the other. Rule Britainnia!!

  • @GangStalkingUK watch?v=vDOUeniCNKM I'm not in Australia, but am looking into tests worldwide.

  • @HyperIndividualist Wow. Is there any doc, news clips on this. I need to expose what they all did to you in austraila etc.
