This Video was taken in October 2007 of our Hotpoint WF840p Washing machine whilst spinning. The machine was one of Hotpoint's premium range of washers with 1400rpm spin speed 6Kg drum and Super Silent wash (same couldn't be said for the spin!) with the next one up being a WF860 with a 1600rpm Spin Speed.

The Machine has soft touch buttons and a blue lit LCD information panel showing what wash program selected, spin speed & temperature details and how long (approximately) until the wash finishes.

So the machine is about 2 and a half years old now (Dec 08) and what does it decide to do about a week before Christmas (2008) yep the bearings decide to go on the drum what a time to go! - when the washing machine started to spin it sounded like there was a Jumbo Jet in the kitchen!

So on the phone to Hotpoint (because it has a 5 year Warranty, and really you would expect a major thing like bearings to go on a washing machine of only a couple of years old especially when we have looked after it and I always told the Mrs not to overload it or anything.

Hotpoint told us that the parts were covered free under the warranty - however labour and callout will be charged at 114.00 Euro!

So anyway I went down to our local Electrical store and asked if they had any old washing machines out the back for recycling and they let me have a rummage through and I found among them a WMA32 washer with an Identical drum to my WF840 and I opened up the door and spun the drum and it was silent and there was no play in it. So got it home stripped it down (on the 23rd DEC - when other people where no doubt enjoying their Christmas parties!) and swapped over the drums.

It Took the best part of the day to strip them down and after a few grazed knuckles getting the drums out and a bit of a bad back but there was success and now we have a nice quiet WF840 back now and i saved myself 114.00 Euro so i am pretty pleased about that.

Not too pleased with Hotpoint washers now though seeing as the Bearings went in under 3 years of use. i read somewhere on the net that the bearings should last the lifetime of the washing machine so if thats the case the lifetime of this WF840 was just over 2 years then which is stupid especially as it cost quite a lot when it was new it wasn't a cheap one and we could have bought a lot cheaper at the time.

  • I was thinking of buying one. Any one nos what the Dryer is like on it?

  • @madhead1981 no dryer on this particular model its a washing machine only....

  • I'm not sure that this is emptying away fully by the little bit of water on the window. Plus if the water isn't quite all going the spin doesn't speed up. To me it did sound like it was going that fast but I know that it was probably just set on a slow spin. I love watching washing machines, all that power. Don't you get a little kick out of the power it takes to lift the wet washing in the a high speeds.

  • yes i think it is fascinating the amount of power it takes to spin and dry them clothes and often wonder what noise/damage would happen if the bearings of the drum should break at its highest spin speed of 1400rpm!

Yes I often wondered about all that water in the last spin and should it all be there on the inside bowl/window. I checked the pump and the hose and the filter and they are all clear, I dont really know why all that water is there at the end

  • something went wrong with my dad's hotpoint wt746, not too sure. but it was only 2 years old and hotpoint tell you it's okay it's all under 5 year warrenty, but then charge you a bloody fortune to call them out. cause they were gonna charge us a ridiculous amount too :L but it turned out only some screws needed tightening at the front of the drum.

  • its a hotpoint say no more well known for their bearings to fail

  • bull crap..

I fit kitchens for a living.

Electrolux, Hotpoint, Caple, are all about cost saving with materials nowadays. And you can tell..

If you have the money, go for something that WILL last 20 years with Proper build quality.. Miele! or Gorenje etc..

  • always start but what a plain machine costs..

look for a top of the line plain machine no extra added features..

Find out how much it is now add the cost over that of what it would be if it had a computer and extra stuff..

now you will find it is probably 2 or 3 times more than what you paid..

my advice to you is look for machines that boast craftsmanship and quality as its selling point and pay the extra even if its plain.. because now you will be paying for the materials they used to make it

  • You know I can give a little bit of old advice to you for the next machine (of any kind) you buy in the future..

    It's not always about price..

And more expensive is not always better.. well it is hardly ever better..

    Consider this..

While that is a nice washer / it looks nice and has a lot of features and is computerized..

remember that is where all the money you spent went.. in looks the computer and features..

but what about craftsmanship and materials??

    computers are expensive period..

  • more than likely he has the WF860p washer
